Yankee Candle Review: COCONUT BEACH Easy Melt Cup

find me on Blogspot!

Yankee Candle Coconut Beach

My Review for:   Yankee Candle- Coconut Beach

Yankee Description: "A taste of the tropics—warm coconut blended with pineapple and Tahitian vanilla."

               Fragrance Notes:
Top:  Salty Air, Pineapple
Mid:  Fresh Coconut, Lei Blossom
Base: Airy Musk, Tahitian Vanilla

This Is Not A Scent I Would Choose For Myself...

  • Mike got me this fragrance, back when he bought me my Scenterpiece. Had I smelled it in the store, I wouldn't have gone home with it. Coconut candles are severely lacking in my current stash. Coconut is tricky because I'm  picky. I look for authenticity & freshness. I don't want body care. I abhor candied shaved coconut as food AND fragrance. The notes seem perfect for what I want. FRESH coconut. Pineapple. Vanilla. What could go wrong?
  • Cold Sniff: It's a pleasant & rather mild body care/suntan lotion type of coconut note. Not my favorite, but it's an inoffensive beach scent. It smells more watery coconut than fresh coconut, The coconut note lacks depth & creaminess. I wouldn't cook w/ this coconut. I would wear it to moisturize or prevent sunburn. The musk in the base notes comes through, in what I call, the Aftersniff. THAT is what sends this fragrance into "body care/suntan lotion" territory.

To be honest, I find this to be a little boring. I've smelled it before, and I've smelled it done better.

Oh Well...Lets Melt This Sucker!

  • First off, the throw isn't great. I can barely smell it in my hallway after half an hour. It fills up my mid-sized living room "okay." It's another one of those scents you can get used to after 10 minutes.

  • Despite all the notes listed, there isn't a lot going on, as far as fragrance complexity. I pick up the musk, which is no longer an Aftersniff. It's front row center. It's so strong, I can't find the vanilla at all. There's nothing there to sweeten it. The musk overpowers everything, especially the pineapple, which I never would have guessed was in there. I think more "swimming pool locker room" than day at the beach.
  • I do seem to pick up a hint of something green, maybe floral. This must be the Lei Blossom peeking through.
  • When you hover above the melt cup, the floral note is much more prominent. It comes through stronger than the musk. With my nose above the wax, I am reminded of Designer Impostor Perfume. This is more like a Designer Impostor Beach Candle. The closer you are, the less you can smell the coconut. The floral note doesn't carry due to it's weak throw and fragrance strength. My dollar store candle is better than this melt cup.

  • IF the floral note carried, it would have saved the scent, despite lack of pineapple. I'm disappointed by Coconut Beach. If you like musky, coconut tinged suntan lotion, you might like this. Just be aware both the throw & fragrance itself are weak. This will probably NOT fill your room with scent, unless you put it in a small bathroom. Maybe the candle performs better, but I don't like this scent enough to find out.

-Fragrance: 5/10       (less musk, more floral & pineapple needed!)
-Throw:       5/10        (good for small rooms)
-Overall:       C-

Yankee Candle perfect beach candles coconut pineapple mix
(My Perfect Beach Combo!)

Update: I burned my Warm Pineapple Upside Down Cake candle w/ Coconut Beach and the scent was perfect. The musk from Coconut Beach was softened and sweetened by Pineapple and Brown Sugar. Even though both candles have relatively weak fragrance strength, they worked beautifully together. My living room smelled like a bright, playful, blue-skied beach day. If only there was a Coconut, Pineapple & Brown Sugar candle out there... Yankee, get on it!

Yankee Candle Review: Warm Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Yankee Candle Warm Pineapple Upside Down Cake

My Review for:   Yankee Candle- Warm Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Yankee Candle Description: "A special treat--warm pineapple sweetened with brown sugar and soft vanilla. "

Fragrance Notes:
                                   Top:  Sweet Brown Sugar
                                              Mid:  Golden Pineapple, Crystallized Sugar
                                   Base: Creamy Vanilla Glaze

A Rather One-Note Candle:

This is the first returning favorite I've purchased from Yankee Candle. I'm not the biggest pineapple fan, but I DO like cake and bakery scents. Pineapple is fine...as long as it's not too sweet. In hind sight, I should have looked at the fragrance notes more closely. There is not a "cake" or "pie" or bakery note to be found. Just pineapple, sugar, and more sugar.

On cold sniff, a lovely natural pineapple smell floats up to you as soon as you take the lid off the jar. Freshly cut pineapple. Although I like this particular pineapple note, it is so dominant, I can't smell anything else. It's not the type of scent that lingers. After you've smelled the candle for about a minute you can't smell it strongly anymore. Your nose gets used to it. It randomly wafts by you, then disappears. This is all on cold sniff so let's see what happens when we Light It Up.

Because this candle seemed to be a little weak in fragrance, I assumed it would be weak in throw as well. When I come across a weaker candle, I tend to burn it in my bedroom. My bedroom is around the same size as my living room, but it has a door I can close, to trap in the scent. That's where I decided to burn Warm Pineapple Upside Down Cake.

The candle has been burning with my bedroom 3/4 way shut. The scent is stronger, but still weaker than I would like. I have to walk all the way into the room to smell it. I was unaware this candle lacked bakery notes, so I kept smelling for them. I'm mystified as to why they call this candle "Pineapple Upside Down Cake", when there is LITERALLY no cake notes. A better name for it would be, "A Pocketful of Pineapple", or something similar. The pineapple & sugar in this are sweeter when it's lit. It's Pineapple and sugar + sugar + more sugar. I search for more, but all that happens is, I smell burning candle wax about as much as I smell pineapple. The pineapple seems a little less fresh too. No longer freshly cut.

This candle badly needed a bakery note to add dimension to it. To create layers within the fragrance, almost ANYTHING would have been fine. This is weak and very one note. This candle is essentially 3 notes: Pineapple, Sugar, Vanilla. Sugar just adds sweetness and I can barely detect vanilla. I think it gets lost in the sweetness. Too bad... that might have saved it from becoming just a mixing candle. It seems to be the type of candle that plays well with others. I'm keeping it for this reason only.

Note: For it's first mixing test, I burned it with Orange Dreamsicle. I was hoping the pineapple would bring out the orange, and all the different sugars would bring out the vanilla.

It's not a bad mix. The Boyfriend said he liked it. IMO, the generic, muted orange has actually drowned out the pineapple from my candle. The sugars didn't help bring out any of the vanilla in Pineapple Upside Down Cake. I WILL say that, up close, I can smell the pineapple, and it's a beautiful blend. Unfortunately, you can only smell this mixture, hovering over the two candles, with you nose right above the flame. This might work really well if you have 2 Upside Down Pineapple Cake candles available to burn with the 1 Dreamsicle. I don't, so this mix doesn't work, but I am encouraged by it's potential, mixing it with future scents.

Yankee Candle: MAGICAL FROSTED FORREST

Yankee Candle Magical Frosted Forest

My Review for:   Yankee Candle- MAGICAL FROSTED FOREST

Size:  22 oz. Double Wick Tumbler

                                           Official Fragrance Notes:
Top: Icy Eucalyptus, Frozen Strawberry Leaf, Raspberry Ice
Mid: Pine Needles, Balsam Fir, Crushed Pineapple
Base: White Cedar, Tonka Bean, Golden Amber

Size:  22 oz. Double Wick Tumbler

Sledding at Pat Root's House...

When I was a kid, I grew up in the country. Fletcher, Vermont to be specific. I have some of my most vivid memories, attached to scent, growing up there. My childhood wasn't perfect, but until I was 10, it was pretty damn good.My parent's, my older brother, and I grew up in a 3 story converted farmhouse with more acres of woods than I can even fathom owning now. In the winter, our backyard was an Evergreen lover's paradise. We had towering and majestic, 100+ year old trees all over our property. My winters' smelled like fresh snow, pine cones, pine needles, and wood stoves. To this day, whenever I smell someone's wood stove, I breathe it in as deeply as I can. Mmmmm....childhood.

Mike and I have only had one real tree in nearly seven years together. My old apartment had an open floor plan and high ceilings, perfect spacing for a Christmas Tree. I'll never forget how Mike decorated our beautiful tree with Jason Varitek baseball cards. Jason Varitek was the captain of the Red Sox, and I always lusted after him. Maybe it was the beard.... ANYWAY, obviously I have amazing memories tied to the smell of REAL Christmas Trees. Sadly, our current apartment just doesn't have room to house one. I read nearly all the reviews for "Christmas tree" scented candles on Yankee Candle's website. They all sounded similar, with just a few notes different. Many reviewers said the same thing: "this smells like REAL Christmas tree!". It's hard to choose ONE scent out of the many, many offered.I finally settled on Magical Frosted Forrest because the name reminded me of the winter woods, out in the country. Could it really smell like Fletcher?

On cold sniff, I smelled almost a minty top note, along with a fairly authentic pine/pine cone middle. Then the fragrance is easily overwhelmed with Eucalyptus, tickling your nose and getting caught in your throat like Vick's Vapo-Rub. Finally, there was just a hint of a clean, soapy fragrance, almost undetectable, but definitely there.
My immediate concern was whether this candle smelled like trees in a forrest . I can confirm that this candle smells just like that. Less a "Christmas Tree" scent and more of a "surrounded by pine trees, walking in the forrest, LOOKING for the perfect tree" experience. I hope that makes some kind of sense to you but I know not everyone grew up in New England. When the candle is burning, you smell much less of the Eucalyptus, and MORE of the softer pine/woods/snowy notes. If you are looking for something that smells like the tree itself, I would recommend checking out one of their other MANY scents, listed on the website. HOWEVER, if you want to smell what it feels like to slide down a hill with the other neighborhood kids in the country at Pat Root's house, with fresh snow and Pine Trees all around you, stock up on this candle! This is a seasonal scent, so supply is limited now, but I will DEFINITELY be repurchasing next fall/winter. The throw is very good, filling my living room, but not overwhelming. This particular scent is perfect for gift giving too, as I can't imagine many people would dislike the scent of a Magical Frosted Forrest!

EDIT: This is the only candle where I had some tunneling. I trimmed the wicks and it burned fine until it got a little below halfway. One of my wicks has drowned in wax and I can't get to it! The other one is fine, but now my candle burns unevenly, which is very sad because I REALLY love this scent!
